A friend of mine and I are pretty good at programming but we decided not to proceed a degree in Computer Science because programming and computer concepts have HORRIBLE pay compared to other professions.

Coding programs is a bad idea for a job. Eventually, your age becomes inversely proportional to your pay.

Maintaining security is actually more based around cryptography than computer science.

If you:

A) Love computers

B) Willing to make a salary less than 100,000... (realistically 30k)

C) Are okay at math

Then sure go ahead and proceed with an education on computers.

Like many areas, your pay is relative to the specific part of coding/computing that you choose. I advise against Windows Software Programming as the pay is terrible, and you'll end up spending most of your life writing programs for accountants...

However, Web Development generally pays around 60K+ (US) per year, and Game development even more.

If you are interested in the area of Game Development, I recommend C++, else if web dev is the thing for you, then you'll never go wrong with PHP =P
