I am currently building my 'perfect' laptop and I can add McAfee software for a price. It is really needed? The computer will be used for school work and surfing the web. I have never had an problems with any other computer that I have had and to me security software is just a waste of money.. and you have to pay almost every year to renew it. Let me know what you think.

You absolutely, positively, need to have security software. Even just surfing the web is going to put something on your system at some point. The amount of virii and spyware today is getting rediculous, it is almost unavoidable.
But yeah, there are free alternatives out there such as http://free.grisoft.com and even online scanners (altho a little slow) like http://www.trendmicro.com

The only "perfect" laptop or desktop is a Mac. You don't need all of the security crap with a Mac. :)
