Have windows 98 need advice on internet security?

Don't know much about computers but I need security for the internet on this machine as am unable to purchase a new machine for another 2 months. The machine I have is - GeniuneIntel Celeron Processor 240.0MB RAM, system resources 56% free, file system 32 bit.

This is all foreign language to me. What do you recommend for broadband ie anti virus and firewall to go with this machine?

Your advice is appreciated

Sounds like an upgrade will be needed shortly. Your system will run Windows XP if you want to purchase the operating system separately. If you just want to wait for a new machine, I would invest in a product like Symantec Internet Security / Anti-virus/ personal firewall or something similar. Just make sure the system requirements will work with Windows 98. Then when you get your new machine, you can put it on that one. Also, make sure you keep your virus definitions up-to-date.

As for Windows 98, I don't believe Microsoft is supporting it anymore with updates. So any new security holes found in the operating system by hackers will not be fix.

Besides software, some basic common sense when surfing the net and checking email will go a long way also when it comes to security. Make sure you don't open emails that you don't know who its from, never let websites that you do not know of install active x programs, etc..

Good luck!

Forget it. 98 is antiquated.... especially for someone that doesn't "know much about computers". To successfully and securely run 98 at this point would require you to at least be a power user.
