Vista should have better security. However, your old hardware in the computer may not support Vista if you decide to upgrade. I am using XP SP2 and it's ok. As long as you have a good anti-virus sw installed and run anti-spy like yahoo anti-spy (once a week) to clean up your tracking cookies, your computer should be ok. Also, enable XP firewall is always better to protect your computer.
Vista is still unstable and has compatibility problems especially with peripherals. Improving security is not a good reason to move to Vista. There are plenty of free virus and adware eliminating programs available. I recommend AVG anti virus and Zone Alarm (google them). Win Patrol is excellent for more advanced users. If you use Zone Alarm and AVG you will need to turn off Windows firewall, which is pretty much useless anyway.
Get yourself At least Norton's antivirus software 2007, then turn on your windows firewall if it isn't on! You can do so by going into your computers control panel!

I have seen this problem before. I used an old windows 98 boot disk and re-format the hard drive the old fashion way with fdisk. once you have completed that set your BIOS 1st boot device to CDROM and put your XP disk in the drive...reboot and when prompted to boot from disk do so, then follow the instructions. I did this for a friend with the same issue. worked great.

Oh and please don't go to the Geek Squad, they do NOT know what they are doing. They keep me in business following them around fixing their mistakes!

Okay, some of what that guy said makes no sense because it's already very clear that you have already HAD XP on the computer... so what you should do is locate the XP disc that came with the computer. When you start your computer, enter the boot menu and change your boot order to boot from the CD drive first. It should restart, pop the XP CD into your computer and follow the instructions to reinstall XP. It's not that complicated. If all else fails, go to BestBuy %26 pay the GeekSquad to do it, they know what they're doing.

I may be wrong but if I am not mistaken you will have to go back to the sites (or if you have the cd) and redownload them. You will not have to pay for them again but you will have to download it on to your computer again. I know it agervating but sometimes it is well worth it.

When any of the websites i go on need to use activeX, especially windows update, i get a yellow information bar telling me that my security settings do not allow websites to access activeX's stored on my computer. When i set my security settings, including cookies, too a lower level its still says the same message. I tried resseting internet explorer settings but that didn't do anything either. Quarantine it first and have the entire disk scanned for more infected files. If the Windows fails to operate right after quarantining , have the entire disk reformatted and the Operating System reinstalled.

Whatever it finds click on the box next to the program and remove everything be aware it will create a backup file if it is a good program and if it is a harmful one it will permanently DELETE IT! it will ask you to restart do so and when you come back you should have gotten rid of the virus or spyware..... You don't necessarily have to download aim. You can use aol instant messenger online. Just go to www.aimexpress.aim.com. It works just like AIM, if not better. I use it all the time.
just go to the web site and chat from there. only remember to errase your history after you get done or they will find out and spank you.lol
You might want to use AIM directly from the aol.com website. It's not a down-loadable program, but you can still communicate with people on your buddy list.

In addition, I imagine I should learn at least the basics of programming.

I noticed one of my PCs seemed a little slower when I switched to the new Yahoo mail. My guess is that it is using more resources on my computer then the old one did. Then again, since it's a beta version, Yahoo may not have worked all the bugs out of yet. I'd give it a few days and if it doesn't improve, you may need to clean your PC with a program like CCleaner (It's free). If that doesn't work, you may need to upgrade your PC's memory if possible.

If someone in your family was using your computer, before you were, they probably didn't log off of the yahoo network. Then it might say that someone else is on your computer. Just sign back in, using your own account..
The message "another person is logged on to this computer" has nothing to do with your Yahoo account. It's a Windows account. Try using LOG OFF on the start menu instead--look at the users. Also, check for the .NET security container.

I*f your computer presently has a TV output, usually an S connector, you should be able to connect that to your TV and go into display property settings to set-up the TV. If you don'tb have any TV output, then you will need a video board in your computer with multiple outputs. This is common in middle of the road video boards in the $100 range. Typically, these boards will have two DVI/VGA outputs and a TV output with a connector going to a dongle with component and S outputs. Using the driver that comes with the board, you typically can spread your desktop across two monitors (one can be the TV), put the same thing on both monitors, or put different things on the two monitors.

Two prime sources for these boards are NVidia and ATI. Look at the NVidia 7600 series boards.

so when you do a DNS flush, you are flushing out all the entries made....

now whenever you try to connect your computer would in search of the DNS server, which will be with ISP.....

Boot your computer into safe mood (press F8 as your computer is booting up and from a list, choose Safe Mode). If you are able to get to the main desktop of Windows, open Norton and do a scan of your whole system. I recommend doing the same with the Spyware removal program as well. Once you are done scanning is safe mode, reboot the computer and try scanning all over again after your computer has booted up normally.

here are several things you can do to increase the "speed" of your computer.

1) Clean up the disk. Uninstall unneeded programs (especially those that run at startup and/or put something in the system tray), run Disk Cleanup, and defragment the drive. This is a good first step that will almost always take a few seconds off boot time and application loads for any computer.

Generally, IT (computer security) and general (physical) security are two separate career paths.

For IT security, your best bet would probably be to start off with an entry level type of general IT job to get some industry experience, and then transition into the IT security field. Eventually, you will get the experience and skills you will need to pass the CISSP and/or one of the many other IT security certifications.

Many people in the general security field first start off in the military or in law enforcement. You don't have to have this type of background, but it can be helpful.

If I was just getting out of school with a security management degree, and wanted to get into general security, I would probably try to get a job with one of the larger security consulting firms (AON, Kroll, Control Risks) or one of the larger, more reputable security guard agencies, such as Guardsmark. After you have a few years of experience under your belt, then you can begin to get some of the industry certifications such as the CPP and PSP.

The important thing in any case is to get a job, any job, just to get your foot in the door of a quality company. Once you are inside of a good company in your chosen field, you can then work your way towards your ultimate goal.

Select the link at top right to go to Yahoo!'s Home Page.

Mouse over the Mail Icon under where it says (Hi, your Yahoo! id).

You should get a drop down menu with your latest emails displayed.

Select an email and click it. You then get to a new page about Shortcuts, but just select the button for Mail and it should take you to your Mail page.

It wasn't getting redirected to the shortcuts page on some servers and not going to the mail page.

I hope this helps some until Yahoo! Mail gets a fix for us.

Go to start and go to control panel there select add/remove programs and scroll through to see if this "clean up trojan" is in there and if so, check the box and check remove. Otherwise shut down and reboot, then go to control panel and tools, then internet options and select "system restore"to a time before the hacking incident. putting security (antivirus) is not going to speed it up. She has to clean it up first and then keep it clean. More than likely she has a load of spyware on the machine. Go and download Ewido and run it. www.ewido.com

Then download spybot from www.download.com and run that. You should see it get faster once all the junk is off of it.

I agree that the slowness is most likely the pc needing to be cleaned up. As far as security goes I have found that a combination of AVG for antivirus, AdAware for antispyware, the built in XP firewall (if you have XP pro) and a little common sense goes a long ways. AVG and AdAware both have free versions that allow updating of virus and spyware definitions.

Google security virus???

For the past 3 weeks I haven't been able to access google.com because of some weird virus I have. Anytime I try to access google or any google related site (such as gmail and google checkout), I get taken to page entitled google security. It says that my computer is infected and that I need anti-virus software. I have read on other forums that this is a trick that could potentially download malware and/or a winfixer on to my computer. Does anybody have an idea about what's wrong and what I could do to fix this? Thanks.

I would say they are about equal. It is just a matter of choice. Which ever one is the cheapest would be the one to get.
Norton always messes up the computer. McAfee is definitely better, but neither of their firewalls are very good, and you can get better (i.e. catches as much, slows your computer down less) antivirus for free at http://free.grisoft.com.
norton is the best i use it.

Norton is a system hog and will slow you down to a crawl, but there are soooooo many bells and whistles, unless you understand all the different settings you won't be more or less protected with either one.

Mcafee is just as useless as Norton, too many configurations and bells and whistles, oh and it'll slow down your system too, because they both tey to check everything you do on your computer constantly, like even opening up solitaire, both programs have to check their settings log to see if its approved, then it has to check that against the operating system log to see if its been accessed before, then it has to decide whether its okay to proceed, then it'll finally allow the program.

Norton has two suites of software for MAC users, namely Norton AntiVirus and Norton System Works, but I do not think you require any as MAC is quite stable and is virus free platform.

Be assured but you are more safe without Norton.

When I try to logon to the yahoo site for my email I get an error message stating that "There is a problem with this website's security certificate". The security certificate presented by this website has either expired or is not yet valid.

I am using Norton Security software to protect my computer and have not had any problem accessing my email at your site until last week.

The error page goes on to state that it is recommended that I close the webpage and do not continue to use the website. It then gives me two options: 1) Close the webpage or 2) Continue to the website (not recommended). The only way I can get to your site is to click on the continue to the website option.

Are you using a bookmark to get to the Yahoo Mail page?

If so, you may need to check the bookmark that you are using. Yahoo uses a server farm (multiple servers acting in parallel) and will load balance their use. A user connects through the main address and the system sends them to the server that is least busy. Sometimes it is possible to bookmark an address that sends you to one of those servers rather than going through the load-balancing process. This means you may end up going to a server that the load-balancer would know to avoid.

I just checked the login page for Yahoo's Mail, the dates on the Certificate seem to be correct. You may be connecting to a server that was taken out of the load balancing pool.

Make sure that when you are trying to connect to Yahoo Mail, you use http://mail.yahoo.com

From what I hear you have to be good at scripting, which is like 'lite programming' like perl/python. But even advanced perl looks just like crazy C++ code.

Perl looks like C because it is a C structured language. Once you actually learn it though, it is NOT difficult at all. It's a pretty straight forward language and will really open you up to the world of programming. Just start with some tutorials and go from there.

Right now I'm actually in the midst of working on an application in C# that will make calls to a Perl script I wrote.
One of the biggest programming tasks you will have in the security field is UNIX/Linux script shell writing.

Most of the other tasks that you would do already have applications designed for them and it is a matter of purchasing or obtaining them

Ok, delete Cookies first. Then History. Then Temperory Internet Files. that should delete a lot of unneccessary stuff that won't hurt you. or you can go to control panel and click on Add or Remove Programs. then uninstall any programs you don't need.

Also some computers run slow when you virus software updates and scans your computer

Router security - Linksys -?

Hi,

is it possible to have two wireless networks from one router? I managed to set a secure one up easily enough and gave it a custom name. As expected I'm also able to pick up numerous other ones with being in a condo. There is one network that I constantly pickup that is not secured and called Linksys (stock name) ...always with the same signal strength as my own. I'm aware that this could easily be my neighbours unsecured network..but I just want to ensure that it isn't a second one that I've unknowingly created resulting in a security risk for my network/computer.

Any advice would be great appreciated.

i just downloaded what i thought was a harmless upgrade on my current security suite, but now my computer is all messed the hell up. i get no icons, no taskbar, and every time i re-start my computer, i have to do ctrl+alt+del every time i want to access any files or microsoft word or windows media player... how can i reset my computer to how it was yesterday, or even just a few hours ago? please help me! Try "System Restore" which you can find in system tools. you can restore the system to any previous date. even in case of failure of system it works effectively
Sounds like you will have to install Windows again as the anti virus will be screwed up, do you have the original Windows disks that came with your PC/Laptop ?

Norton Internet Security not updating protection & spyware updates?

I installed a copy of Norton's Internet Security on a newly purchased computer with Windows Vista. The program states that it "Needs Attention" and the protection and spyware udpates are not updated. When I click on the "Fix It" it goes through the live update but the definitions did not update? How can I fix this? Thanks.

Port 80 is a safe port, and their remote port is 35781. Have you only been scanned, or you feel that the remote port 35781 as been able to get passed your fiewall.

Other computers in the house will connect to torrent trackers through the router. The desktop computer was updating trackers fine until yesterday, and nothing has changed that I know of. The ports are all the same, and turning off the firewall and all security programs on the desktop computer doesn't change anything. And again, it works fine when the desktop is connected directly to the modem.

there are ways to logon to your router this normally requires you to go to a web based interface nthis is normally using the address http://192.168.0.1 or http://192.168.1.1 then sometimes it will require you to logon this will vary between diffrent routers but the username is normally admin and the password is password then you will be required to open up what ever port you specify for your program and posible turn off your routers built in firewall. there is instrucions on how to do this on many sites just a matter of googling

The router may need to have port forwarding set up on it (read up in its manual about Network Address Translation or NAT and port forwarding features).

I tried closing and opening the window again, but the same thing happens. What must I do?

I don't know if the two things are related but it happened after I installed McAfee.

Just reinstall Encarta, it has no connection with MacAfee.

Almost all te anti-viruses do not detect other anti-viruses but that's just for personal ends. My ZA Pro doesn't detect AVG and prompts me to buy the Zone Alarm anti-virus.

It popped up on my screen with the microsoft Windows XP security window saying that my computer has a blackworm trojan virus and winfixer can remove it by purchasing and downloading it for $39.95. Obviously it looked authentic due to the Dell and Microsoft icons, and the computer was behaving badly, so I entered my bank card information and home address and downloaded it. By the next morning, I had told my wife about it, and she immediately checked consumer reports to see if this winfixer was the real thing or not. It turned out to be a scam! Stupid Me! Fortunately i was able to remove the malware with Ad-Aware SE.

the same thing happened to our PC. the technician from the dsl company brought his own laptop and when he connected it to our modem, the connection worked. he said that our PC might have a virus, it turned out that when my husband re-formatted it, the installation was not proper. so, we reformatted it again, and after that the connection worked. i would suggest that you reformat your PC.

If you are using a modem, you can only use one machine. You need a router, this allows the use of multiple machines on the connection. You now need to default all the settings you changed, these are things you really never should touch in normal circumstances.

Cookies are just information stored by websites. Some cookies (probably the ones Norton detect) can track where you go and send it to some company. They are not a virus in any way shape or form (well it may be classified as a trojan since it gives info on what sites you've been to).

Short and Sweet: Remove the ones Norton says, but in general cookies are fine.
